Experience Unity with Nature: Cycling Through Yabakei with Mr. Matsunaga

Introduction

Nestled in the beautiful mountainous region of northern Oita Prefecture lies Yabakei. Here, you can enjoy cycling while marveling at the seasonal scenery, thanks to Yabakei Cycling Tours run by Mr. Matsunaga.
Mr. Matsunaga offers guided tours that take you through the natural beauty and rural lifestyle of Yabakei, showcasing its majestic landscapes and unique local charm via bicycle.
As a cycling station, the tour provides comfortable rental bikes and organizes guided tours for beginners to seasoned riders alike. Guests have praised his tours for allowing them to leisurely enjoy Yabakei’s serene atmosphere and slow pace of life.
In this article, we’ll delve into what led Mr. Matsunaga to immerse himself in cycling and how he embodies the role of a guide who brings out the best of Yabakei.

What Inspired Mr. Matsunaga to Take Up Cycling?

I became passionate about cycling when I returned to my hometown and started working as a member of the “Chiiki Okoshi Kyoryokutai” (Community Revitalization Team).
Back in middle school, I used to commute via the local cycling road, but at that time, I didn’t think much of it—it was just part of my daily routine.

However, as I began promoting the region through my work, I reconnected with cycling and decided to ride along all the local cycling roads. It was then that I truly noticed Yabakei’s beauty—sounds of the wind, the flow of the river, and the chirping of birds. These were things I never appreciated as a child.

Eventually, as I became involved in managing a rental bike facility, my desire grew not only to recommend routes but also to share the experiences I’d felt by riding together with my guests. That’s how I began working as a guide. Interacting with local residents also brings me great joy and is one of the most rewarding aspects of this job.

What Are the Benefits of Cycling?

Cycling allows you to fully engage your senses and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a place. Unlike traveling by car or train, you can notice small sounds, smells, and the feel of the wind—all of which are distinct on a bicycle.

Yabakei’s natural beauty is truly remarkable. While cycling, you can feel the cool breeze in the forest or along the riverbanks and enjoy the changing landscapes that only a bicycle can reveal. It feels as though you’ve become one with nature, offering a refreshing experience for both mind and body.

What Does Mr. Matsunaga Focus on as a Guide to Welcome Guests?

I aim to show my guests the “unfiltered essence” of the region. Rather than just explaining Yabakei’s tourist spots and history, I want them to experience the everyday Yabakei that I personally feel in my daily life.

This includes dipping your feet in the river, listening to local farmers share stories of their lives, and appreciating the simple yet beautiful moments of daily life. By engaging in such experiences, guests can develop a deeper connection with the region’s lifestyle and nature.

How Do You Ensure Guests Can Easily Enjoy the Tours?

I see bicycles as a tool for experiencing the region, not just a mode of transportation. Therefore, the physical demands of my tours are kept manageable. Routes are customized to be enjoyable for everyone, from children to adults.

For families, I design shorter courses that include activities such as cooling off by the river or enjoying outdoor experiences like cooking rice with a mess tin. By incorporating such elements, my tours are accessible and enjoyable for all.

From Your Perspective, What Makes Cycling in Oita So Special?

In Oita, you can enjoy both mountain and ocean scenery in a single course. Particularly in areas like Beppu and Kunisaki, you can cycle along the coast while taking in stunning views of the surrounding mountains—like a panoramic movie brought to life.

Cycling also offers a unique sense of accomplishment. Reaching your goal, whether it’s conquering elevation gains or covering long distances, is immensely satisfying. Additionally, one of the greatest perks of cycling in Oita is the opportunity to soak in an onsen (hot spring) after your ride. This is undoubtedly one of the most appealing aspects of cycling in this region.

Conclusion

Through my conversation with Mr. Matsunaga, it’s clear that cycling is not just a mode of transportation—it’s a unique way to connect with the wind, sounds, and nature of a place.
The breathtaking scenery of Yabakei, the warmth of the local residents, and Mr. Matsunaga’s thoughtful guidance combine to make his tours welcoming and enjoyable, even for cycling beginners.

Take a ride through Oita’s rich natural landscapes, refresh both your mind and body, and experience the full charm of cycling. It’s a journey you won’t want to miss!
