An Unforgettable Ride Through Majestic Nature – Cycling Aso-Kuju with Hashimoto

Introduction

Based in Aso-Kuju National Park, cycling guide Hashimoto offers a wide range of activities, from sports cycling to sightseeing tours. His work is widely supported by cyclists, thanks to his well-planned guided tours in breathtaking natural settings and his attentive services that cater to everyone, from beginners to seasoned riders.

This time, we had the opportunity to interview Hashimoto about how he first got into cycling, his thoughts on being a guide, and the charm of Aso-Kuju National Park.
We hope you enjoy reading until the end!

What inspired you to start cycling, and what made you fall in love with it?

Hashimoto’s journey with cycling began in the summer of his 19th year. He borrowed an old bike from the 1970s or 80s, owned by a friend, and set himself the challenge of pedaling 80 km through mountain roads from his college dormitory to his grandfather’s house.

When he finally arrived at his grandfather’s house, located at an elevation of about 800 meters, the sense of achievement—riding through the mountains, drenched in sweat, accompanied by the sounds of cicadas—became a life-changing moment.

At 20, he used money gifted by his relatives to purchase a new bike and equipped himself for winter rides, deepening his passion for cycling even further. Over time, cycling became an essential part of his life, helping him relieve stress and stay motivated in his studies.

What joy does cycling bring to you?

The beauty of cycling lies in its flexibility—you can start whenever you like and enjoy it at your own pace. Since it’s an individual sport, you can tailor it to your style. At the same time, meeting fellow cyclists of similar skill levels and forming connections through events and tours is a huge benefit.

Through guiding tours in Aso-Kuju National Park, Hashimoto has met many people from Japan and abroad, and he deeply appreciates how cycling has expanded his world.

Aso-Kuju National Park itself is a paradise for cyclists, offering diverse landscapes and stunning natural scenery. With mountain passes free of cars, dramatic peaks, and tranquil roads, it provides everything a cyclist could ask for. Whether you seek challenging climbs, breathtaking views, or peaceful rides, this place has something for everyone.

As a guide, what do you prioritize when leading tours, and what do you hope to offer your guests?

Safety is my top priority as a guide. I take the first 10 to 15 minutes of a tour to assess each participant’s skill level, ensuring they have a ride that suits their abilities.

For professionals, I create an environment where they can fully focus on their ride. For intermediate cyclists, I plan routes that allow them to capture great photos and videos. And for beginners, I incorporate sightseeing and hot spring visits into the course so they can enjoy a well-rounded experience.

I also leverage my deep local knowledge to introduce hidden gems and must-see spots unique to the area. The rich nature and tourism resources of Aso-Kuju National Park are the foundation of my guiding activities.

How do you ensure that participants can enjoy the tours with ease?

ASO KUJU CYCLE TOURS is based in a high-altitude location, which allows us to offer beginner-friendly tours that start with a downhill ride.

For those who struggle with uphill climbs, beginning with a descent is a huge advantage. Plus, the serene environment—where cows often outnumber cars—creates the perfect setting for cyclists to immerse themselves in the ride.

From your perspective, what makes Oita a great destination for cycling

I see Oita as a major cycling hub connecting different regions. With ferries linking it to Shikoku and other areas of Kyushu, as well as airports facilitating domestic and international travel, Oita has immense potential as a gateway to Japan’s cycling experiences.

Having worked on tour development in collaboration with the Shimanami Kaido, I strongly believe that Oita serves as an important bridge between various cycling destinations, offering diverse and extensive riding opportunities.
